This trip took place from February 9-13, 2017 and was only open to fundraisers who had previously joined us on either the 2015 or 2016 trips. It coincided with the beginning of the school year and the opening of the first building of the Free High School campus, and wasn’t so much about fundraising as it was about celebrating what we had accomplished. Random Acts staff and 11 volunteers got to be part of this special occasion.

Free High School Campus
The day before the grand opening, we visited the now-completed first building, a sight (and a site) worth all of the effort and hours we had all put into fundraising and more. Everyone in the group had played such a key part in making it possible, and getting to see the results was deeply rewarding, not to mention exciting. The next day during the opening ceremony, a grand celebration involving much singing and dancing, we could see that the Free High School students were just as happy about the building as we were, from the way they ran around taking pictures of everything and chatting excitedly.
This day was the highlight of the trip, and strengthened our resolve to construct a much-needed second classroom building and finish the campus.
We later also got a chance to return to the campus to do a bit of work on the grand staircase.

For the second year, Random Acts sponsored BPP’s annual theater workshop, at the end of which the students perform in their community in front of a big crowd. This year we were lucky to be able to attend the play, which was pirate-themed but with an underlying message about the importance of education, and the kids did a spectacular job. (So did the dog that wandered onto the stage!)
